What RecoLive MultiCam is used for?

RecoLive MultiCam is an app for multi-camera video recording, where multiple cameras record the same subject or event from different angles and distances. It uses several iPhones, iPods touch or iPads to emulate the equipment of a TV studio (cameras and production switcher). You can use it to record conferences, concerts, lectures, sport competitions and more. You can switch to different angles or combine angles in real time, while recording. This avoid editing in post-production and saves you a lot of time. The result is in full HD.

How many cameras could I connect to the production switcher?

The production switcher supports up to 4 cameras (4 video sources). If you are using the built-in camera, you can connect up to 3 other external cameras via Wi-Fi. If you disconnect the build-in camera, you can use up to 4 external cameras. You can also choose which camera is used as the audio source (see “How is audio managed?”). Screencasting is also possible (see “What about screencasting?”).                          

Is live streaming over the Internet possible?

RecoLive MultiCam is a multi-camera recoding system. The app has a built-in switcher capable of live editing (transitions between cameras and multi-camera compositions), but the production is recorded and cannot be streamed over the internet while recording.

For live streaming, please consider using Switcher Studio.                          

Does the app record in HD?

Yes. Video is always recorded in Full HD (1920x1080, 30p variable), except when the camera doesn't allow it. Some FaceTime cameras, for example, only allow 720p. In general, the video quality is equivalent to what you get with the iPhone's Camera app.                          

How much storage must be available on my devices?

You need about 3GB per hour per camera. On the switcher, you need to store the footage of each camera as well as the final composition. For example, if you shoot one hour with 4 cameras, you need 3GB on each camera and 15GB on the mixer.                          

Does the switcher work in HD?

No. The switcher receives video from the remote cameras via Wi-Fi and displays it on screen. The displayed video has a limited quality, far below what the cameras can provide. It allows you to mix cameras live and build your production, but it is not recorded. Instead, each camera records in its best quality and the final production is built from these high-quality recordings. Thus, the final production depends neither on the switcher nor on the Wi-Fi connection. It only depends on the cameras. You may experience transmission problems or artifacts while mixing, but this will not appear on the final movie.                          

Is it possible to include a PowerPoint or Keynote presentation in my production?

Yes. Please see “What about screencasting?”.                          

What about screencasting?

With RecoLive Capture, you can capture the screen of your Mac and use it as a video input in RecoLive MultiCam. This allows you to include Keynote or PowerPoint presentations in your production, to demonstrate and teach the use of software features, etc.. How is audio managed?

In the camera list, you can choose which camera provides the audio track. Only one camera can be selected as audio source and only its audio will be present in the final movie. Combining audio from several cameras in not possible.

The camera gets the audio from its built-in microphone or from an external device (microphone, audio mixer, etc.) connected to the headphone jack or to the Lightning connector.

To use the headphone jack as an input you need an special adapter with a TRRS jack. If the audio comes from a mixer output or any other line-level source, the Smartphone Pro - Line Pi from AV Resilience is a good solution. For XLR microphones, use the iRig Pre or equivalent. If you want to build your own adapter, look at this. The headphone jack has a single input which means that audio coming from this jack is mono.

The Lightning connector allows you to connect an audio input device and record audio in stereo. Thanks to Apple's Lightning to USB Camera Adapter, you can connect any standard USB audio capture device working in 16-bit stereo mode as the Behringer UCA202.                          

How to monitor audio with the headphone?

In the iPhone Settings, in the "MultiCam" section, switch on the "Audio Monitoring" option. When this option is enabled, the audio captured by the device goes through the headphone. Please note that you can only monitor the audio coming from the device in which you plug the headphone. You cannot listen to the remote camera audio input from the video mixer.                          

How to speed up the media transfer? How to easily transfer media to a computer?

With a computer, you can transfer all video files via USB.

To do that, please connect your devices to your computer via USB and start iTunes on the computer. In iTunes, select one device, then select the App tab and, on the File Sharing section (on the bottom of the page), select MultiCam. You should have there a list of all video files stored in the app. You can use the "Save to…" button to transfer a file to the computer or the "Add…" button to transfer from the computer into the app. If you prefer, you can just drag these files to the computer or drag back files from the computer into the app.

To build the final composition, please drag video from all devices into the computer, then from the computer into the device used to mix. Then, start the app on that device, go in the recorded media list and open the journal. The final composition should start automatically.

Instead of using USB, you can also use iTunes over Wi-Fi. To do that, enable "Sync with this iPhone/iPad over Wi-Fi" in the iTunes device Summary. However, we recommend using USB because it's faster and more reliable.                          

Does the app support any camera other than iPhone, iPad and iPod's ones?

Currently, only iOS devices can be used as cameras. Some webcams can however be used thanks to RecoLive Capture. For more information, please visit RecoLive Capture.                          

Is it possible to use the FaceTime camera?

Yes. On the input list (camera list), tap on the camera you want to connect. Then, tap on the small camera icon located after the camera name, on the right.                          

Could I connect two iPhones together without having a Wi-Fi network?

Both iPhones must be connected to the same Wi-Fi network. This normally means that there is a Wi-Fi access point (or router) on which both iPhones are connected. If not, you can create a Wi-Fi network by enabling the personal hotspot on one of your iOS devices.                          

What about Galileo?

Galileo was a robotic pan/tilt dock designed and sold by Motrr. This company stopped its activities in May 2016.

Currenlty, Galileo still works with RecoLive MultiCam but we cannot guarantee that it will work with next app or iOS updates. Having no help from the manufacturer, we will not be able to solve any compatibility problem and we will probably have to remove this feature in the future.

If you are using Galileo today, please keep a copy of the current version of the app. In this way, even if the app is updated, you still have the version working with Galileo.

To use Galileo, please follow the instructions here below or watch our tutorial. We assume here you have an iPhone used as camera and an iPad used as switcher, but nothing prevents you to have a different setup.

  1. Be sure the app is up-to-date (in the App Store just check there is no update available).
  2. In the iPhone settings, verify that Bluetooth is enabled.
  3. Open the app on your iPhone.
  4. Touch the triangular button in the bottom left corner to open the main menu.
  5. In the menu, choose “Galileo”.
  6. Twist your Galileo as shown on the iPhone's screen. A message appears on your iPhone and you have to tap “Connect”. Then, the text “Connected” is displayed on your screen.
  7. Go back to the menu and tap “OK” to close it.
  8. The text "Galileo" must be visible on the bottom of the video preview on your iPhone.
  9. Touch and drag the video preview to verify that Galileo moves.
  10. On the iPad, open the app. This device has to be on the same Wi-Fi network as the iPhone.
  11. On the iPad, in the “Inputs” tab, select your iPhone to establish the connection.
  12. Accept the invitation on the iPhone.
  13. On the iPad, on the bottom-left panel, select the camera corresponding to your iPhone. The video coming from the iPhone's camera appears on the preview window (top-left). The text "Galileo" also appears on the bottom of this preview window.
  14. Touch and drag the video in the preview window to move Galileo.

                          

How to control exposure and white balance?

Three modes are available :

  1. Auto mode : exposure and white balance are adjusted continuously.
  2. Manual mode : exposure and white balance are adjusted on demand, by tapping on the image where you want the adjustment to occur. Autofocus is also controlled in this way. On the iPad, tap on the image inside the preview panel.
  3. Locked mode : exposure and white balance are not adjusted anymore.

The mode can be selected in the camera control menu (See “How to access the camera control menu?”). Exposure and white balance mode can be linked to focus mode and be controlled by the “AF” button. Please note that focus and exposure are optimized for the location where you tap. The white balance, instead, is always performed on the whole image.

On the camera control menu you have also access to focus mode, stabilization and torch. The menu is available on the camera as well as on the switcher which can control all these parameters from remote.

Could I choose where the autofocus is performed?

Yes, just tap on the point of interest and all adjustments will be optimized for this location. Do that on the camera or on the switcher which remotely controls the camera. On the iPad, tap the point of interest on the preview panel.                          

Is it possible to zoom?

Yes. On the preview panel, use the standard pinch gestures. The zoom factor is displayed on the left-top corner. When it is written in black, the zoom is lossless. When it is in red, the video is upsampled, which means the image quality decreases. Zoom is currently available only on iPhone 5, 5C, 5S, 6 and 6 Plus, iPod touch 5th generation, iPad Air and iPad mini with retina display.                          

Is image stabilization possible?

Yes. The majority of iPhone models have a built-in image stabilization algorithm. It can be switched on in the camera control menu. See “How to access the camera control menu?”.

Stabilization introduces a noticeable delay on the images displayed on the switcher, but not on the final production. You cannot switch this mode on and off while recording.                          

Could I switch on the torch (LED)?

Yes, the torch (LED Flash) can be switched on in the camera control menu from both the camera and the switcher. See “How to access the camera control menu?”.

Torch can also be used as a tally light. Put a red sticker on the LED to reduce light intensity and make the tally light more realistic (see the photo here).                          

How to access the camera control menu?

On the switcher on iPad, the camera control menu is present in the bottom-right area (third tab). Changes you make in this menu apply to the selected camera (the one displayed in the preview panel).

Otherwise, tap and hold the camera's image to display the corresponding control menu. To dismiss the menu, touch it and swipe it towards the bottom.

On the camera control menu you have access to focus, exposure and white balance modes, as well as stabilization and torch. The menu is available on the camera and on the switcher which remotely controls the camera.

The image is upside-down, why?

The app has been designed to work with the camera sensor in its natural orientation. This correspond to holding the device with the Home button on the right.

If you want to use the device in the other orientation (with the Home button on the left), please go in the iPhone Settings, MultiCam, Device Orientation and select "Inverted".

If you make use of special lenses which invert the image, please go in the iPhone Settings, MultiCam, iSight Camera Lens, and choose "Invert".                          

Do I have to buy the app for each device I'm using?

No. The app is linked to your iTunes account. This means you can buy the app once and install it on each device you want. On each device, you have to open the App Store, log in with your credentials and install the app.                          

How to avoid video artifacts and jerky images?

Video is transmitted to the switcher in realtime, via Wi-Fi. Its quality depends on the Wi-Fi connection and on the capability of your iOS devices to encode and decode video. A bad Wi-Fi connection and low encoding and decoding performances give low quality and jerky images.

It's important to understand that, even if you experience transmission problems or artifacts while mixing, this will not appear on the recorded video. Having a robust and reliable Wi-Fi network is not crucial but improves the video preview and makes your work as director more enjoyable.

We suggest using a modern Wi-Fi access point with simultaneous dual band (2.4GHz and 5GHz), supporting WMM and Apple Bonjour and having MIMO on both bands. MIMO is no used by every iOS device but having it often means having a modern chipset. We also suggest to disable Background App Refresh (in your iPhone settings => General) and avoid using apps which access Internet in the background while you are recording.                          

The app stops when the iPhone rings. How to avoid this?

In the iPhone Settings, "Do Not Disturb", enable "Manual" and, under "Silence", choose "Always".                          

In the camera list, I cannot see all other iPhones present on my Wi-Fi network, why?

First, each iPhone must be connected to the same Wi-Fi network. Second, the app must be opened on each of them. Then, your Wi-Fi network must support Apple Bonjour (IP multicast). Without Apple Bonjour, cameras are not visible in the list, but can be connected by URL. Please go to the camera list, select “Other...” and follow the instructions you find there.                          

Is it possible to transfer the whole video stuff to FinalCut Pro X or a similar software?

Each camera saves its footage to a MOV file (H.264, VFR). The final clip is also saved to a MOV file. All these files are freely accessible and can be imported in any editing software which supports the iPhone video format. The list of cuts and compositions (also called EDL) is also accessible as a proprietary XML file. Importing this file into an editing software as FCPX is not yet possible.                          

Can we switch to a camera without having to tap the “→ Live” button each time?

By double-tapping a camera preview (one of the small previews numbered from 1 to 4), the camera goes live directly, with no need to select it or to touch the “→ Live” button.                          

What happened to RecoLive Switcher?

RecoLive Switcher has moved to www.switcherstudio.com. See our blog post for more information.                          

What is the difference between RecoLive MultiCam and Switcher Studio?

These two apps are similar and share several features. However, their goal is different:

  • RecoLive MultiCam is for HD recording.
  • Switcher Studio is for live streaming.

RecoLive MultiCam is not able to stream but has a composition engine which allows you to produce the final clip from what any single camera has recorded. The full process is done automatically and the result is a full HD video with the best quality we can reach on iOS.                          

What about Android?

We would like to make our app available on Android. Unfortunately, this will not be possible in the short term.
